This project sensitively refurbished the iconic Town Hall to deliver a 21st century arts facility which is fully accessible and suitable for different uses. It maximises the potential of the Town Hall and contributes to Newry’s City Centre Master Plan for the regeneration for the city.
Issues addressed through the refurbishment include accessibility, providing a safer and more accessible venue for performing acts to shift stage sets and scenery, including that of providing a hoist, as well as proceeding with a link bridge over Bank Parade to the neighbouring Arts Centre, to improve both disability access and evacuation during times of emergency, including fire.
Other works included structural survey and repair of the auditorium ceiling, replacement windows throughout, and repairs and repointing of external walls and parapets. Kriterion Conservation Architects inspected works and attended regular technical meetings throughout the period of the contract, chaired by the NMDC Estates Section.
